Fire Certification Levels

Fire Fighter I

For Wisconsin certification at this level the candidate shall have met the requirements defined in NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 2013 Edition, Chapters 5.2 through 5.5 and the job performance requirements defined in Chapter 5, Core Competencies for Operations Level Responders, Chapters 6.2 and 6.6., Mission-Specific Competencies: Product Control, of NFPA 472. Certification is awarded upon the candidate passing written and practical skills examinations.

Fire Fighter II

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter I shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 6.2 through 6.5 of NFPA 1001. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Fire Fighter I passing written and practical skills exams.

Driver/Operator-Pumper

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter I or II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 5.2.4 of NFPA 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Fire Fighter I or II passing written and practical skills exams.

Driver/Operator-Aerial

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Driver/Operator-Pumper shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 4.3.7 and 6.1 through 6.2.5 of NFPA 1002. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Driver/Operator-Pumper passing written and practical exams.

Fire Inspector I

For Wisconsin certification at this level, the candidate shall have met the requirements defined in Chapters 1.3.1 through 1.3.5 and the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 4.3.16 of NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. Certification is awarded upon the candidate passing written and practical skills exams.

Fire Officer I

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 4.7.3 of NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Fire Fighter II passing written and practical skills exams and completing the Emergency Services Instructor I course.

Fire Officer II

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Fire Officer I shall meet the requirements of Fire Instructor I as defined in NFPA 1041 Standard of Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications and the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 5.1 through 5.7.1 of NFPA 1021. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Fire Officer I passing written and practical skills exams.

Emergency Services Instructor I (formerly Fire Instructor I)

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 4.5.5 of NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Fire Fighter II passing written and practical skills exams.

Emergency Services Instructor II (formerly Fire Instructor II)

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Emergency Services Instructor I shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 5.1 through 5.5.3 of NFPA 1041. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Emergency Services Instructor I providing documentation of completion of specialized course and project work. 

Emergency Services Instructor III (formerly Fire Instructor III)

For certification at this level, the Wisconsin Certified Emergency Services Instructor II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 6.1 through 6.5.5 of NFPA 1041. Certification is awarded upon the Certified Emergency Services Instructor II providing documentation of completion of specialized course and project work.
