Action Research Projects

To inform education practices and policies, the WTCS institutional research team conducts action research projects. An action research project analyzes a specific question (or set of questions) to provide insight that is actionable for improving student success and closing student equity gaps. We then share the results through professional learning with WTCS stakeholders so that colleges can take action to improve educational outcomes for all students. Below, you can find our action research cycle that documents our yearly process for gathering and selecting research ideas and then conducting and sharing this work. In addition, you can find the action research briefs, which provide a short summary of each project and key findings.

As part of the WTCS Student Success Center, we are initiating our action research cycle, and we hope that you will be involved in this process! Action research analyzes a specific question (or set of questions) to provide insight that is actionable for improving student success and closing student equity gaps. Within this yearly cycle, we (1) gather research project ideas, (2) filter these ideas and set the research agenda, (3) conduct the research, and (4) share the results with our WTCS community for professional development.

For this work, we would like to invite you to submit action research project ideas through our online form. Research ideas can be submitted through March 15, 2020 and then our WTCS institutional research team will filter these ideas by the following criteria:

  • Whether the appropriate data elements are available (e.g., Client Reporting Data, National Student Clearinghouse);
  • Whether this research has been conducted previously (what is available in the peer-reviewed literature?);
  • The alignment of the project with WTCS strategic directions, federal reporting and priorities; and
  • The value of the project, which should have broad implications and importance for all WTCS colleges.

Our action research projects for 2019 are:
  • Timing of Gateway Courses and Subsequent Success (e.g., time to program completion)
  • Equity in Program Access
  • Career Pathway Progression

We are currently preparing and reviewing the action research briefs for these projects. Please check back soon for these reports.
