Fire Certification Levels

Fire Fighter I

To obtain Certification at the Firefighter I level, the candidate shall have met the requirements defined in NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, Current Edition. The participant must also complete the Hazardous Materials Operation level course in order to meet the remainder of the NFPA Fire Fighter I JPR.

   
Fire Fighter II

To obtain Certification as a Firefighter II, the candidate shall meet the job performance requirements defined in the NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, Current Edition.

  *Prerequisite for Certification: Wisconsin Firefighter I certified
   
Driver/Operator-Pumper

To obtain Certification as a Driver/Operator-Pumper, the candidate shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4 and 5 of NFPA 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications.

   
Driver/Operator-Aerial

To obtain Certification as a Driver/Operator-Aerial, the candidate shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4 and 6 of NFPA 1002.

  *Prerequisites for Certification: Wisconsin Firefighter I and Driver/Operator Pumper certified
   
Fire Inspector I

To obtain Certification as a Fire Inspector I, the candidate shall have met the requirements defined in Chapters 1.3.1 through 1.3.5 and the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4, 5.4.3, and 5.4.4 of NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner.

   
Fire Officer I

To obtain Certification as a Fire Officer I, the candidate shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 4.7.3 of NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications.

  *Prerequisite for Certification: Wisconsin Firefighter II certified and successful completion of ESI I
   
Fire Officer II

To obtain Certification as a Fire Officer II, the candidate shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 5.1 through 5.7.1 of NFPA 1021.

  *Prerequisite for Certification: Wisconsin Fire Officer I certified
   
Emergency Services Instructor I (formerly Fire Instructor I)

To obtain Certification as an Emergency Services Instructor I, the Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 4.1 through 4.5.5 of NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications.

  *Prerequisite for Certification: Wisconsin Firefighter II certified
   
  Emergency Services Instructor I Certification Renewal Information:  Policy 50, FSEO Policy and Procedures Manual
 
Emergency Services Instructor II (formerly Fire Instructor II)

To obtain Certification as an Emergency Services Instructor II, the Wisconsin Certified Emergency Services Instructor I shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 5.1 through 5.5.3 of NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications.

  *Prerequisite for Certification: Wisconsin Firefighter II certified
   
  Emergency Services Instructor II Certification Renewal Information:  Policy 51, FSEO Policy and Procedures Manual.
 
Emergency Services Instructor III (formerly Fire Instructor III)

To obtain Certification as an Emergency Services Instructor III, the Wisconsin Certified Emergency Services Instructor II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Chapters 6.1 through 6.5.5 of NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications.

  *Prerequisite for Certification: Wisconsin Firefighter II certified
   
  Emergency Services Instructor III Certification Renewal Information:  Policy 52, FSEO Policy and Procedures Manual.

Note: If a candidate wishes to take a course but does not have the prerequisites and/or does not wish to attempt certification, they may take any of the available courses in any order. This method of progression through the fire service courses is not recommended; however, students may find it necessary to do so to satisfy SPS 330 compliance (certification is not required for SPS compliance).
